Nuclear Plant Security

Nuclear power plants have always been vulnerable to terrorism; recent tragedies have served only to highlight the reality of the threat. During tests in the decade before September 11, 2001, nearly half of the country’s nuclear plants were unable to prevent a small team of mock intruders from simulating conditions that could cause a meltdown, despite advanced warning.

While upgrades in plant security have happened in the past few years, the fact remains that both federal regulators and the nuclear power industry remain in denial about the severity of the threat and the possibility an attack could successfully accomplish its mission.  Current standards do not approach conditions already seen on September 11 in terms of the number of attackers, training, and determination.

Public Citizen advocates for far stricter security measures that recognize the true nature of the threat while preserving transparency, accountability, and public involvement.
