Decommissioning (Old Reactor Cleanup)Permanently shut-down nuclear power plants must be decommissioned, a process the Nuclear Regulatory Commission defines as "safely removing a facility from service and reducing residual radioactivity." Nuclear utilities establish trust funds, through fees collected from their ratepayers, to pay for the immense costs of decommissioning. Public Citizen monitors decommissioning policy, advocates for responsible clean-up requirements and works to safeguard decommissioning trust funds for their intended purpose.
Because Public Citizen does not accept funds from corporations, professional associations or government agencies, we can remain independent and follow the truth wherever it may lead. But that means we depend on the generosity of concerned citizens like you for the resources to fight on behalf of the public interest. If you would like to help us in our fight, click here. |
