Shearon Harris, North CarolinaIn January 2006, Progress Energy publicized its intention to seek a permit to construct and operate two new nuclear reactors at the Shearon Harris site near Raleigh, North Carolina. Originally, Progress had expected to submit its application for a Combined Operating License (COL) to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in late September or early October 2007. However, on May 31, 2007, Progress Energy announced that it would postpone pursuing a new reactor at the Shearon Harris nuclear plant in Wake County, NC. On February 19, 2008, Progress recommitted to expanding their nuclear station located in Wake County by submitting an application for a COL to the NRC. The application seeks approval for two new Advanced Passive Pressurized Reactors (AP1000). To view Progress's application click, here. Progress is a member of a business consortium called NuStart Energy Development that is pursuing new reactors in Mississippi and Alabama .
